Chapter Three

It’s still dark out when I head back to my dorm, thankful the succubus girl let me leave when I’d knocked lightly. Last night was... amazing, but when I’d woken up, I’d felt antsy. This stuff with the alphas was not part of the plan, and as much as I was starting to enjoy it, I couldn’t let it distract me.

And I couldn’t actually start thinking they cared about me. That seemed like the perfect way to set myself up for disappointment.

Still, I smile when I think of them. They think they’re such tough guys. Such alphas. I wonder what people would think if they saw them with me.

I’m still smiling when someone grabs me and I’m thrown hard against a wall.

The air’s knocked from my lungs. The creepy guy from earlier in the night stares down at me, and a dozen students stand behind him. I look from them to the opening into the alley between buildings. But no one seems to have seen what happened. And no one else seems out in the early hours of morning.

I climb unsteadily to my feet. “What do you want?”

The man’s gaze holds mine. “You broke the rules, Null.”

My gaze moves to my escape again. “What rules?”

“You entered the dark woods. The punishment is death.”

I look back at him. “It could’ve been someone else.”

“It wasn’t.”

My heart races. “Your alpha made an exception.”

His mouth twists into a pained smile. “No one told us about an exception.”

My muscles tense, and I race for the entrance to the alley. Instantly, I’m caught and yanked back against the wall, my back hitting the brick painfully.

“I won’t let you do this,” I say.

His twisted smile comes again. “You won’t have a choice.”
